Loras College
Loras College is a private, four-year Catholic university located in Dubuque, Iowa. Founded in 1839 by the first bishop of Dubuques, Most Rev. Mathias Loras, the college was then known as St. Raphael Seminary and its main goal was to provide training and education to young men preparing to enter the priesthood and to provide higher education to the residents of the area. The college has gone through a series of name changes until it finally adopted its current name during its centennial in 1939.
Since its inception, Loras College had been providing undergraduate education, conferring only the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. In 1963, however, following the decision of the Catholic University of America to discontinue its branch program of graduate study in Loras College and cognizant of the growing need for higher education among the populace, the college had no other recourse but to initiate the granting of Master of Arts degrees through its own Graduate Division.
The first step was to make the college coeducational in 1971. Then in 1973, the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees were conferred.
Today, Loras College confers over 40 majors and programs in the undergraduate level. For its graduate programs, it offers Master of Arts degrees in Education, Applied Psychology, Theology and Ministry.
Total cost of attendance for academic year 2009-2010 at Loras College is US$32,461 per year for fulltime undergraduate students broken down into US$24,070 basic tuition, US$1,365 mandatory fees, and US$7,026 average room and board. An estimated cost of US$1,300 may be added for books and supplies. To help students pay for their cost of attendance, financial aid is extended via loans, grants and scholarships.
