Bethany College, Kansas
In 1881, Swedish Lutheran immigrants headed by Rev. Dr. Carl A. Swensson founded the Bethany College in the northeast quarter of Lindsborg, Kansas. The present Bethany College is a four-year, undergraduate college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It grants the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, and Bachelor of Social Work Promise. Its location is in a small but historic town with a long-standing reputation for the arts and association with Swedish heritage.
Bethany College occupies a 53-acre campus that houses 21 buildings for academic, cultural enrichment and recreational use. The Presser Hall features a 1,700 seat auditorium while the Wallerstedt Court is where the library, learning center and student union are found. Bethany is exceptionally proud of its MIngenback Art Center which is considered a premier art education facility in the region. Students are required to live on campus, whether on one of the residence halls or perimeter houses in the area. Application for off-campus residency is only open to students aged 22 or older as well as those having special circumstances.
Academic programs in Bethany cover a wide range of concentrations from humanities to fine arts which are offered from the pre-professional to the professional level. The college is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission. It has gone a long way since the time of its establishment as Bethany Academy in 1881. It went through several names including Bethany Normal Institute as well as Bethany College and Normal Institute before finally settling on its present name of Bethany College in 1889.
Classes are small and handled by professors who are primarily experienced teachers. A regular four-year college course costs about $ 25,000.00 annually, including the tuition, fee, room and board. About 85% of Bethany students receive aid, most of which are from the college itself. Scholarships are based on merit, need and talent.
