Emporia State University
Established in 1863 as the State of Kansas’ first school for training teachers, Emporia State University traces its beginnings as the Kansas Normal School. In spite of initial difficulties due to lack of appropriations and several external factors, it managed to become the largest Normal School in the county aside from being the largest school in Kansas by 1889. The school was renamed as the Kansas State Teachers College in 1923, the Emporia State College in 1974 and finally the Emporia State University in 1977. The university’s main campus is located at 1200 Commercial Street, Emporia, Kansas. It also maintains the Metro Learning Center in Overland Park which offers programs designed for working professionals residing in the Kansas City Metro Area.
Still nationally known for its programs in teacher preparation, Emporia State University offers various undergraduate and graduate programs through its School of Business, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and School of Library and Information Management. Its Education Programs are offered through The Teachers College. Emporia State University remains the first and only university in the world that offers Engraving Arts as a four-year degree. Distance Learning Programs are offered in alternative formats such as off-campus sites and mediated delivery systems including the online system.
Educational costs in enrolling with Emporia State University would include in-state tuition of $2,862.00, $ 517.00 for room and board and $ 900.00 for estimated book cost. Out-of-state tuition amounts to $ 10,214.00. The university accepts up to 20 students per year for several select programs under the Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP). This specific program was established for the purpose of providing opportunities to residents of Kansas, Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska and Missouri to study at considerably reduced tuition levels.
The composition of the present student body is made up of residents from 100 counties of Kansas, 45 other states and at least 55 foreign countries. More than 150,000 students have studied and graduated from Emporia since its founding. It is interesting to note that one out of every six classroom teachers in Kansas is a product of Emporia State University.
