Haskell Indian Nations University
Haskell Indian Nations University is a four-year, degree-conferring university located in Lawrence, Kansas. Established in 1884 as the United States Indian Industrial Training School, the aim of the school then was to serve as a boarding school for 15 native Indian students and provide them with agricultural education from grades 1 to 5. The focus was on assimilation and training the students to become reliable and useful members of the dominant society.
In 1927, the school, which was then known as Haskell Institute, began offering college level classes and in 1970, it became known as Haskell Indian Junior College offering only college-level classes. The addition of a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary teacher education in 1993 resulted in the change in the school’s name to Haskell Indian Nations University.
Haskell offers majors in American Indian studies, environmental science, business administration, and elementary teacher education. The university was divided into three colleges and schools; namely, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, and the School of Education.
Although students at Haskell enjoy tuition-free education as it is subsidized by the state, they still need to pay certain mandatory fees. The standard fees for academic year 2009-2010 totals US$215 broken down into student activity fee of US$35, housing fee of US$56, cafeteria fee of US$68, library usage fee of US$51 and little nations fee of US$5.
