Alice Lloyd College

Alice Lloyd College is a private, non-profit institution located in Pippa Passes, Kentucky. It’s mission is “to educate mountain people for positions of leadership and service to the mountains.” It holds the distinction of being one of the only seven work colleges in America. This means is that all full-time students, regardless of financial situation, are required to work 10 to 20 hours each week. In return, students not only develop good work ethics but that those in need have their tuition guaranteed.

The college offers 16 degree programs in liberal arts, science, education and teaching, business and management, and nutrition and exercise therapy. The most popular majors in the college are those under education and teaching and science.

Alice Lloyd College had 621 students enrolled in 2007 with a student to teacher ratio of 12 to 1. It has a selective admission process with 47% acceptance rate (about 587 applicants accepted in 2008). Applicants are expected to have scores of at least 17 on the ACT, 420 Verbal and 400 Math on the SAT, and at 2.25 GPA in pre-college curriculum courses. Adults without high school diplomas may apply provided they get the same scores in ACT or SAT and get at least 50 in the GED test.

All full-time students are required to live on-campus, except for students who live near enough to live with their immediate family. Dormitories are gender-separated, rooms are checked regularly by resident advisors, and room and board is provided. Meals are served at the dining hall three times a day on weekdays.
