Frontier School of Midwifery & Family Nursing
The Frontier School of Midwifery & Family Nursing (FSMFN) is a private, non-profit, community-based university located in Hyden, Kentucky. It traces its beginnings to the Frontier Nursing Service which commenced the training of midwives and family nurses in 1939. Some 50 years later, the same university would be the first to offer a midwifery course via distance education.
FSMFN aims to equip nurses with high-quality education that will allow them to become competent, ethical and compassionate nurse-midwives and nurse practitioners who are willing to render their services to the most underserved sectors of society.
Myra Breckinridge, founder of Frontier Nursing Service, has always regarded nurse-midwifery as a vital component of health care. However, it was not until November 1, 1939 when the first batch of nurse-midwives began their training at FSMFN. Prior to this, one had to recruit these nurse-midwives from Great Britain or else send American nurses to Great Britain for training.
Today, FSMFN offers its students Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degrees and post-Master’s certificates that result in education as certified Nurse-Midwife, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner. All these programs are community-based which means the communities in which these nurses live serve as their classrooms for learning. All coursework relating to these programs are done via distance learning to insure that nurses are able to fulfill their professional aspirations without having to leave the communities that they serve.
Cost of tuition at FSMFN is US$420 per credit for full-time students and US$460 per credit for part-time. Those enrolled in the MSN completion courses have to pay US$475 per credit. Since the courses are web-based except for two classroom sessions, there is no need for on-campus housing.
