Bowdoin College
Bowdoin College is an independent, residential, undergraduate, liberal arts institution established in 1794. This non-sectarian, co-educational college is located in Brunswick, Maine occupying a 215-acre campus. More than 120 buildings comprise the college’s educational, residential and recreational facilities.
From the words of the “Offer of the College”, Bowdoin’s seventh president aptly puts forward the aim of the college. It talks about being at home in all lands and all ages, of counting nature as a familiar acquaintance, of art being an intimate friend, of carrying the key to the world’s library in one’s pocket, of making hosts of friends and of losing oneself in generous enthusiasm and cooperation with others for common ends. These words sum up Bowdoin’s aim to put education to work for the betterment of society.
The college campus is physically organized around a central quadrangle. Some of its facilities extend to several sites which are located at varying distances from the central campus. It even went as far as acquiring two neighboring islands to preserve the environment of its scientific station.
Bowdoin College has 33 academic departments offering various interdisciplinary programs in a curriculum that provides extensive opportunities for research, fieldwork and creativity. The distribution requirements of Bowdoin can be satisfied by choosing one of six options before choosing any major or departmental minor. These options includes the First Year Seminar; Inquiry in the Natural Sciences; Exploring Social Differences; International Perspectives; Mathematical, Computational or Statistical Reasoning; and Visual and Programming Arts. Major requirements on the other hand are satisfied again by choosing one of six options namely a departmental major, a double major, a coordinate major, an interdisciplinary major, a student-designed major or any of the offered departmental minors.
Educational costs amount to $ 50,900.00 annually to include tuition, board, room and activities fee.
