Frostburg State University

Frostburg State University is a public, four-year university located in Frostburg, Maryland. Founded in 1898, Frostburg State was first known in 1902 as State Normal College #2 tasked to train teachers for the Maryland Public School System. By 1935, the college had started granting four-year educational programs leading to a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education degree to its students and had changed its name to State Teachers’ College. It was in 1987 that the college received university status and was finally renamed Frostburg State University.

Today, Frostburg State offers various undergraduate majors and graduate programs under its distinct colleges of business, education and liberal arts and sciences. It also grants Master’s degrees in science and the arts.

Currently, there are 5,385 students enrolled at Frostburg State University, 4,755 of them undergraduate students and 630 graduate students. The student to faculty ratio is 18 to 1 with the average class size no more than 30 students. This assures students that they will be given focused attention by their teachers, most of whom hold doctorates or the highest degree possible in their respective fields of study.

Total tuition and fees for academic year 2009-2010 at Frostburg State University is US$14,304 for Maryland residents; US$24,500 for out-of-state residents; and US$20,660 for contiguous county residents as part of the university’s Good Neighbor Discounts. These rates do not include charges for room and board. Financial aid is extended in the form of loans, grants, scholarships and student employment to help students who may find the cost of tuition too steep.
