University of Maryland
The University of Maryland is located in College Park and was established in 1856. Originally called the “Maryland Agricultural College,” the University is now home to one of the top business schools in the world, the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Maryland is also known as a leading research institution. More than 25,000 undergraduate students currently attend the University of Maryland.

With more than 100 majors for students to choose from, you may have trouble choosing one. You aren’t left to your own devices to make this decision, though. The University has advisors available to help students choose the right major for them. You could even do the same thing as the late alumnus Jim Henson did: he decided to major in “Puppetry” and children of all ages have enjoyed his Muppets for years.
Getting Admitted the University of Maryland
At Maryland, a prospective student’s academic record and SAT or ACT scores are not the only criteria the Admission Committee considers. Your class ranking, extracurricular activities, and teacher recommendations also matter. Short answers to questions form part of the mix as well.
The University of Maryland has a two-part application process. The first portion of your application is due by November 1 and Part II must be submitted by December 1 for priority consideration. The deadline for regular applications to Maryland is January 20. Decision letters are mailed by April. 1.
Maryland also offers a spring enrollment (January start). To be considered, both parts of your application must be received by August 1. Decisions will be reviewed by December 1 and acceptances will be mailed out depending on available spaces.
Tuition
Maryland gives you good value for your tuition buck. A year at the University will cost $8,005 for tuition and room and board will run an additional $9,109. Books and supplies will cost $1,025 and local transportation will cost approximately $3,024. The total cost of attendance is $21,163 per year.
Sports at University of Maryland
The University of Maryland women’s basketball team are the 2009 ACC champions, and the wrestling team are the reigning champions at the ACC level as well. The University also has a number of teams for male and female athletes competing at the intercollegiate level, including baseball, basketball, gymnastics, lacrosse, swimming and diving, track and field, and more.
