Berklee College of Music
Berklee College of Music is a nonprofit, co-educational institution of higher learning which is considered the world’s premier learning venue for the study and practice of contemporary music. It originated from a small teaching studio founded by Lawrence Berk. It became a college in just over two decades and has been reflecting the state of the art of music as well as the music business for more than half a century.
Berklee is located at Boylston Street in Boston, Massachusetts. It offers courses of study to student musicians geared towards a fully-accredited four-year baccalaureate degree or diploma. This would include majors in Composition, Contemporary Writing and Production, Film Scoring, Jazz Composition, Music Business/Management, Music Education, Music Production and Engineering, Music Synthesis, Music Therapy, Performance, Professional Music and Songwriting. These fields of study can be combined for those interested in attaining dual majors. However, this would require a five-year course of study. The Accelerated MBA Program through Suffolk University is made available to graduates of the Music Business/Management Program which can be completed at the said university’s campus or online.
Degree programs cost about $ 12,510.00 per semester while Diploma Programs are charged approximately $ 10,780.00. These amounts are applicable to the Summer 2009 Programs. The Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 Programs cost slightly higher. Students number about 4,050 from at least 78 countries. The top five foreign countries represented are Korea, Japan, Canada, Mexico and U.K. The average class size is 11 while the number of faculty is 524. All students are considered for scholarship through the audition and interview process. It is notable that there at least 162 Berklee alumni who are Grammy awardees and 80% of graduates work in the music industry. Online Music courses are available through Berklee’s 12-week course or multi-course certificate.
