Boston College

Boston College isn’t a college at all. It is a private university located in Chestnut Hill, a village in Newton, Massachusetts. Established in 1863, Boston College is one of the oldest Jesuit Universities in the United States. The College is located about six miles west of downtown Boston.

Approximately 8,500 undergraduate students attend Boston College. There are 4,000 full-time graduate and professional students at the school, and another 670 graduate students go to school in the evening. There are 675 faculty members and the student-to-teacher ratio is a respectable 13:1.

Boston College is known for producing students who go on to receive prestigious awards at the post-graduate level. Several recent recipients of Churchill, Fulbright, Goldwater, Marshall, Mellon, Rhodes, and Truman scholarships have been Boston College Students. The University’s German Department was awarded 13 Fulbright Scholarships in 2007.

Degree Programs at Boston College

Undergraduate students at Boston College attend either the College of Arts and Sciences, the Carroll School of Management, the Lynch School of Education, or the William F. Connell School of Nursing. Pre-Law, Pre-Medical, Pre-Dental, and Pre-Veterinary programs are also offered at Boston College. At the graduate level, students can work toward Masters Degrees in 23 subject areas and Doctoral degrees in 12 areas.

Getting Admitted to Boston College

If you want to get in to Boston College, you will need to demonstrate that you have the combination of academic ability and personal characteristics needed to do well. More than 30,000 prospective students apply for admission to the freshman class and just over 25 percent of them are admitted. The mean SAT score for those who were offered a place at Boston College was 2059. Having an ACT score of 31 means that you achieved the same level as the average student admitted to Boston.

The first step in applying to Boston College is to complete and submit the Common Application with the Boston College Supplement. Your high school transcripts and recommendations from teachers are mailed in to the College. To be considered for Early Action, you need to have your materials sent in by November 1. The deadline for regular applications is January 1.

Tuition at Boston College

Boston College charges fees per semester. Tuition will cost $18,705 for each semester. Room costs vary, depending on the type of housing, and range from $3,580 to $4,810 per semester. The residential meal plan costs $2,225 per semester.

Sports at Boston College

The Boston College Eagles compete in a number of sports at the intercollegiate level. Male athletes participate in baseball, basketball, football, ice hockey, sailing, swimming, track, and more. Women compete in basketball, cross country, field hockey, rowing, sailing, skiing, swimming, tennis, track, and volleyball.

Students can also use the recreational facilities on campus. Exercise classes are offered, and SCUBA and water fitness lessons take place at the campus pool.
