Brandeis University

Brandeis University is a private school in Waltham, MA. The campus is located within 10 miles of Boston. Named after Louis Dembitz Brandeis, the first Jewish person to sit on the Supreme Court, the university was founded in 1948. The Brandeis campus takes up 235 acres of property in 100 buildings scattered over the grounds of the former Middlesex University.

There are approximately 3,200 undergraduate students and 2,100 graduate students attending Brandeis. They are taught by 326 full-time and 139 part-time instructors. Brandeis has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as No. 31 on its list of the top universities in the country.

Through its Heller School for Social Policy and Management, the University is known for its programs at the graduate level of studies in international development, social policy, and social work. Brandeis is also well-respected for its programs in Computer and Information Sciences, Development Economics, Economics, International Economics, and Psychology.

Admission Requirements

Brandeis has two rounds of Early Decisions for prospective students. If you apply by November 15, you will have a decision by December 15. You also have the option of submitting your application materials by January 1 to receive an answer by February 1. You will need to sign an Early Decision agreement if you apply under one of these admission tracks. If you would like to apply under the Regular Decision track, you will need to have your information sent in by January 15. In that situation, the decision will be released by April 1.

Along with your application form, you will need to send in your high school transcripts, your SATI or ACT with Writing Scores, a letter of recommendation from a teacher, a school report, and a recommendation from a school official. You will also need to provide a personal statement as part of your application package.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Going to Brandeis University will cost you $36,122 per academic year for tuition. Room and board adds another $10,354 to your bill. The cost for a room only is $5,808. All students must also pay $1,172 in fees to attend this University.

Sports at Brandeis

The varsity teams at Brandeis are called, “The Judges.” They compete in the following sports:

• Swimming and Diving
• Tennis
• Volleyball

For financial reasons, the football team was disbanded in 1959. The varsity golf and sailing teams will suffer the same fate in the spring of 2009.
