Massachusetts College of Art and Design
Massachusetts College of Art and Design is a public, independent college that offers baccalaureate and graduate programs for the education and preparation of fine artists, designers as well as art educators. Based on the context of liberal learning, rigorous and professional programs in the visual arts prepare students to use their learning ultimately for the service of the wider community. The college is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges as well as the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. It is believed that one of the reasons why the college was established was to house a collection of a so-called traveling museum.
MassArt, as the college is known to many, can be found at 621 Huntington Ave., Boston, Massachusetts. It holds the distinction of being the first art school in the US to grant a degree. At the time it first opened its academic doors in 1873 as the Massachusetts Normal Art School, its primary purpose was to produce drawing teachers to serve schools throughout the Commonwealth. It also trained professional artists, designers and architects.
Almost 2,000 students from Massachusetts, other New England states as well as those outside New England comprise the student body of the college. More than 200 faculty members and about 250 staff members attend to the various educational needs of the students. Recent campus development efforts seek to integrate the college with its surrounding neighborhood while providing more opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
Students who are residents of Massachusetts pay $ 7,900.00 for tuition. The rate is almost double for students coming from other New England states and triples for students coming from outside New England. Residential facilities cost about $ 8,636.00 per year for the double occupancy option. Housing applications are deemed completed only with the payment of the non-refundable housing and tuition deposits.
