Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts
Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) was founded as the North Adams Normal School in 1894. Its evolution and development is reflected in its name changes as the State Teachers College of North Adams in 1932, the North Adams State College in 1960, and finally as the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in 1997. MCLA is located at 375 Church Street, North Adams, Massachusetts. It occupies its place in Berkshire Hills, one of the most scenic and historic places in the US.
Almost 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students form the college’s student body. Highly qualified faculty members present learning opportunities in a wide range of disciplines and expertise. The average class size is 18 while student/faculty ratio is 14:1. Additional learning options are presented by the Study Abroad Program, Honors Program, Service Learning and Cross Enrollment arrangement with Williams College, a neighboring institution.
MCLA seeks to make quality education affordable. Tuition and fees vary depending on residency status. Massachusetts residents pay $ 6,900.00 while New York/NEBHE residents and out-of-state residents are charged $ 7,400.00 and $ 15,800.00, respectively. Room and board rate does not differ regardless of residency at about $ 8,300.00 per year.
Programs are offered through the various departments including Art, Arts Management, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Computer Science and Information Systems, Education, English/Communication, Environmental Studies, Fine and Performing Arts, History/Political Science and Geography, Interdisciplinary Studies, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Physical Education, Physics, Psychology, Public Policy, Sociology/Anthropology and Social Work, and Women’s Studies. Teacher education however, has been the core of MCLA’s mission since its founding. The college also maintains a non-commercial FM radio station which provides excellent broadcasting experience to students.
