Northeastern University
Northeastern University (NU) has consistently attained high rankings among different college and university reviews, including being in the top 100 of the top National Universities in the US. Perhaps it is most well-known for its innovative co-op program, its extensive research facilities and study-abroad programs. Located in the Fenway and Back Bay neighborhoods in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts, NU is a private research university founded in 1898, then offering evening classes exclusively for males.
By the early 1980’s Northeastern University was taking in about 60,000 enrollments per year. However, NU was a “commuter school” that catered mostly to part-time and evening students. In the mid 1990’s, an institutional change that included reducing the freshman population, improving co-op education and opening state-of-the-art research and academic facilities, led to the onset of Northeastern University becoming more academically-renowned than ever before.
Today, Northeastern University has six undergraduate schools with a total of sixty-five departments. The most popular and competitive programs are Pharmacy, Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science, Nursing, and International Business. The Graduate level has eight schools with more than 125 programs which range from Masters to Doctorate, as well Graduate Certificate courses.
Its co-op program, ranked as number one for Best Co-op/Internships by the US News and World Report, is an embodiment of NU’s emphasis on real-world, experiential learning. In this program, students complete eight semesters of full-time study, and up to three semesters of paid full-time work. As NU has numerous corporate and nonprofit co-op partners both in the US and abroad (including such well-known companies as Microsoft, Disney and Procter & Gamble), the students gain instant contacts and acquire valuable hands-on experience from the leading names in their chosen fields. Northeastern University also boasts of its extensive research facilities in different specializations, such as in anti-microbial discovery, pharmaceutical biotechnology and nano-medicine, and global innovation management.
Tuition fees come to $26,750 yearly, while room and board fees are at $10,180.
