Eastern Michigan University
Eastern Michigan University traces its origins to the establishment of Michigan State Normal School in 1849 which was primarily founded to train teachers and provide instruction in mechanic arts, agricultural chemistry, husbandry and the US laws. It went through the obligatory phase of becoming a college before attaining its present university status. Many residents of the Michigan area, the other states and several foreign countries have been educated in Eastern Michigan University.
The current total enrollment is approximately 23,000. More than 200 tracks are offered in the various undergraduate, graduate, specialist, doctoral and certificate degree programs. Programs are offered through the university’s College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Education, College of Health and Human Services, College of Technology and the Graduate School.
Located in historic Ypsilanti, Michigan which is about 10 miles east of Ann Arbor, the university’s main campus occupies more than 800 acres of property rich in scenic flora and wooded areas. It has 122 buildings including those found at the university’s academic and athletic campuses. Eastern Michigan University has other sites located in Livonia, Traverse City, Detroit, Jackson, Flint and Monroe.
There are about 689 full-time faculty members employed by the university. Doctoral degrees or equivalent terminal degrees are held by 94% of the faculty. The student/faculty ratio is 19:1.
