Hillsdale College

Hillsdale College is a co-educational liberal arts college established in 1844. It is known for being the first American college to stand up against any form of discrimination based on race, religion, or sex and to ban this in its charter. It is also known for its refusal to accept any form of government aid.

With regard to academics, the college offers a two-year core curriculum of liberal arts and science subjects. This core curriculum prepares students for their Bachelor of Arts program. The college offers a wide variety of liberal arts majors to choose from. It also has pre-professional programs, a teacher’s education program, and a journalism certificate program. Although the college’s main campus is in Hillsdale, Michigan, it allows its students to complete their programs off-campus. While still considered enrolled in Hillsdale, these students can receive credit for work done abroad or in other parts of the United States.

Cost of attendance at Hillsdale College for academic year 2009-2010 is US$27,670 broken down into full-year tuition of US$19,380, room at US$3,850, board at US$3,900 and general fees at US$540. This tuition cost is based on 17 hours of credit. Students who want to take up less than 17 hours of credit for their chosen courses have to pay tuition of US$760 per credit hour. Those who want to take up more than 17 credits will pay an additional US$540 per credit hour.

Students can apply for financial aid in the form of loans, grants and scholarships to help them pay for their cost of tuition.

On-campus housing is available via residence halls. All freshmen students are required to live in a residence hall although the college guarantees a dorm room for all four years.
