Lake Superior State University

Lake Superior State University or LSSU is a small public university located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Despite its small size, it has over 3,000 enrolled students from various locations including students from its twin city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Due to the university’s proximity to the Canadian border, many Canadian students have opted to enroll in LSSU and the school has maintained close ties with its neighbor as shown by the fact that both Canadian and American flags are displayed on campus and both Canadian and American national anthems are sung during special occasions.

LSSU is divided into the four academic Colleges of Arts, Letters & Social Sciences; Natural, Mathematical & Health Sciences; Business & Professional Studies; and Engineering & Technology. It is well-known for its programs in fisheries & wildlife management, engineering, teacher education, nursing, geology, business management, fire science and criminal justice. LSSU has the only undergraduate degree program in Michigan on environmental health and many students travel all the way to LSSU to pursue degrees in forensic sciences, recreation management, and legal studies. LSSU also grants a Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction degree.

Cost of tuition for academic year 2009-2010 at LSSU for fulltime undergraduate students is US$4,092 per semester for residents and US$8,184 per semester for non-residents. Resident graduate students pay a tuition cost of US$393 per credit hour while non-resident graduate students pay a rate of US$511 per credit hour. Those who want to live on campus pay an additional fee for room and board at a rate of US$3,835 per semester for a regular room.
