Marygrove College
Established in 1905 as the St. Mary’s College and a direct descendant of the St., Mary’s Academy which opened in 1846, Marygrove College is a product of the faith and courage of its founders – the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHMS). The original school was located in Monroe, Michigan but the increasing student population necessitated a transfer to a much bigger site. It adapted its present name in 1925 when the cornerstone of the present Liberal Arts building was laid in an 80-acre wooded tract on one of northwest Detroit’s developing areas. The college is located at 8425 West McNichols, Detroit, Michigan.
The first lay president of the college devised an educational system based on the liberal arts because he believed that art was the right way of doing anything. It soon became known as the Marygrove Idea which incorporated seven arts for real proficiency – the art of behavior before God, the art of behavior within society among persons, the art of expression, the art of reasoning, the art of historical realization, the art of leisure and the art of making a living. Marygrove College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools to offer associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Almost 10,000 students have chosen to enroll with Marygrove College including undergraduate, graduate students, distance education students and continuing education students. There are 56 full-time and 8 part-time faculty members. Depending on need, there are about 70 adjunct faculty members and 90 mentors for distance learning programs. A total of 179 staff members provide the other services required by the student body.
