Minneapolis College of Art and Design
During the time that Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) was known as the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts, a lone teacher taught classes in drawing and painting. Founded in 1886, the school was established by the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts (MSFA) for the purpose of training persons devoted to art as a profession. It changed its name to Minneapolis Institute of Arts in 1915. It eventually had its own facilities and adapted its present name in 1970. It became a wholly independent institution in 1988.
More than 700 students are currently enrolled with MCAD, 50% of whom are enrolled in design programs while the remaining are almost evenly divided between media arts and fine arts. The average student age is 21. Students come from 29 states and 12 foreign countries.
