Delta State University

Delta State University is a state-financed public institution established in 1924 which also receives funding support from private sources and tuition revenue. Located in a 332-acre property in Cleveland, Mississippi, the co-educational university functions as both an educational and cultural hub for residents of the region.

As a learning institution, it is the most enrolled-in university. It offers an extensive undergraduate curriculum and 12 baccalaureate degrees in 42 majors. In addition, it also provides master’s degree programs in eight fields of study as well as the Educational Specialist degree and the Doctor of Education degree.

There are over 4,000 students enrolled at Delta State University mentored by 258 faculty members, 74% of them on full-time basis. The student-to-faculty ratio is 16 to 1 which is not bad at all especially for students who are looking for a more focused type of instruction from their teachers. For academic year 2009-2010, the total cost of tuition is US$ 4,450 for full-time state-resident students; and US$185 per credit hour for part-time. Non-resident full-time students have to pay US$11,520; and US$480 per credit hour for part-time. Total cost of tuition and fees vary depending on the course load and on the room and board facilities chosen. As a form of assistance to stave off tuition costs, the University extends financial aid in the form of Federal Work-Study jobs.

On-campus housing is provided by the university. In fact, on-campus residence is required for students in their freshman year. Only those with special medical conditions that require additional attention are exempted. Currently, about 30% of enrolled students are living on campus. The university maintains a men’s dormitory, women’s dormitory and apartments for married students.
