Jackson State University

Jackson State University (JSU) was founded as the Natchez Seminary in 1877 by the American Baptist Home Mission Society. It was established primarily to facilitate the intellectual, religious and moral improvement of Christian leaders of the colored people in the area of Mississippi as well as the neighboring states. From its original location in Natchez, Mississippi, it moved to Jackson in 1899. Its transfer signaled an expansion in its curriculum and a change of name to Jackson College. It became the Jackson State College in 1956 and gained university status in 1974. The present Jackson State University is a public coeducational institution that enjoys the support of legislative appropriations as well as federal and private grants.

This historically black research-intensive institution offers baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral programs through its six colleges including the College of Business, College of Education and Human Development, College of Liberal Arts, College of Lifelong Learning, College of Public Service and the College of Science, Engineering and Technology. JSU further supports its programs with facilities such as the e-City where students get to engage in experientially enhanced learning through partnerships with other institutions. The 250-acre main campus is located at 1400 Lynch St. Jackson, Mississippi but maintains several lifelong learning satellite campuses in locations throughout the City of Jackson. This is achieved through the use of community colleges in the area. Distance learning opportunities are likewise provided by JSU.

In-state tuition rate for undergraduates is $ 2,317.00 for a load of 12 to 19 credits. Credits below 12 or over 19 are charged $ 194.00 per credit hour. Out-of-state tuition is $ 3,362.00 but part-time enrollment costs $ 281.00 per credit hour for undergraduates and $ 374.00 per credit hour for graduates. Housing rates cost approximately $ 2,652.00 for single rooms and $ 1,910.00 for double rooms.

JSU was designated as the Urban University of the State of Mississippi in 1979. As such, it emphasizes public service programs that seek to achieve the enhancement of the quality of life as well as solutions to urban problems.
