Missouri Southern State University
Missouri Southern State University is a state-supported, comprehensive university committed to liberal arts education. It started out as the Joplin Junior College in 1937 wherein classes were held under the supervision of the Extension Division of the University of Missouri using the facilities of Joplin High School. Efforts for the construction of a new campus began in 1964 which culminated in the opening of the 320-acre campus in 1997 as the Missouri Southern State College. It achieved university status in 2003.
The university offers programs leading to baccalaureate degrees and selective master’s degrees in collaboration with other universities. These collaborative programs include partnerships with Northwest Missouri State University, Missouri State University, University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Southeast Missouri State University. The university’s Learning Center offers services intended to address academic requirements, tutoring needs, computer lab as well as disability accommodations.
Distance Learning programs are offered through different delivery options including televised instruction, interactive TV, Internet courses, DVD Video Correspondence courses and Weekend Hybrid courses. Programs available through distance learning are the Bachelor or Associate in General Studies, BS in Business Administration, BS in Criminal Justice Administration, and the Associate of Science in Law Enforcement.
Regular weekday tours are given during the spring and fall semesters except during the Christmas and Spring breaks. Requests for appointments need to be done one week in advance. A typical campus tour is given by a current student and provides opportunities to speak with an admissions counselor and a faculty member in the prospective student’s area of interest plus a dorm tour. Summer campus tours are also available.
