Missouri State University
Founded in 1905 as the Fourth District Normal School, Missouri State University was primarily established to prepare teachers for the public school system in Missouri’s southwest region. Its change of name to Southwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1919 reflected its regional mission. With the continuous educational diversification efforts, it became the Southwest Missouri State University in 1972. It adapted its present name in 2005. Its main campus is located at 901 South National Avenue, Springfield, Missouri, but it also maintains its West Plains campus which functions as a second campus having its own mission.
More than 150 undergraduate majors and 43 graduate programs are offered by the university through the College of Arts and Letters, College of Business Administration, College of Education, College of Health and Human Services, College of Humanities and Public Affairs, College of Natural and Applied Sciences and the Graduate College. A long list of departments falls under each college providing numerous areas of study to cater to the students’ diversified interests. Online programs are offered through Missouri State Online.
Tuition cost and fees for undergraduate studies amount to $ 6,256.00 per academic year. Average class size is 30. On-campus housing facilities accommodate approximately 4,000 students through residence halls of three different styles – room style, suite style and apartment style. Living-Learning Communities are interesting options for residence life since students can be grouped based on interests or year level.
The City of Springfield is Missouri’s third largest city. It offers various entertainment perks, shopping venues and outdoor activities thus presenting an ideal campus residence for students. The Springfield and West Plains campuses are separately accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
