Missouri Western State University

Missouri Western State University was founded in 1915 as the St. Joseph Junior College which provided a two-year liberal arts program. It became a four-year college in 1969 and joined the State of Missouri System in 1977. It achieved university status in 2005 and adapted its present name of Missouri Western State University.
The Missouri Western State University occupies a 744-acre campus at 4525 Downs Drive, St. Joseph, Missouri. St. Joseph as a community offers good schools, affordable housing and solid recreational facilities. Kansas City Metropolitan Area is the nearest major metropolitan area to St. Joseph.

The present student body is comprised of 5,476 undergraduate and 65 graduate students. Missouri residents are charged $ 4,562.00 while non-residents are charged $ 7,864.40 per academic year for tuition and fees based on 24 undergraduate credit hours. Annual graduate tuition and fees amount to $ 4,021.00 for Missouri residents and $ 7,009.80 for non-residents based on 18 credit hours. Undergraduate tuition per hour is $ 166.40 and $ 201.00 for resident undergraduate and graduate students respectively. Corresponding tuition rates for non-residents amount to $ 304.00 and $ 367.00 per credit hour.

Academic offerings of Missouri Western State University consists of a total of 79 degree programs including 54 bachelor’s degree programs, 12 master’s degree programs, 10 associate degree programs, 2 certificate courses and 1 post-bachelor certificate course. There are 94 minors to choose from. The average class size is 25 while the student/faculty ratio is 17:1.

Programs are offered through the university’s academic departments consisting of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Professional Studies, Steven Craig School of Business, Graduate School and the Regional Community Policing Institute. Distance Education programs are offered through online classes and televised courses. The Science and Mathematics Building houses a Planetarium that can seat up to 40 people. Shows held in this venue are presented to Astronomy classes, elementary and secondary school classes as well as other private and public groups.
