Chadron State College
Founded in 1909 by the Nebraska Legislature to provide higher education in northwest Nebraska, Chadron State College, which is located in Chadron, Nebraska, opened in 1911 as a public college in the Nebraska State College System.
Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, it is the only four-year and graduate-degree granting college in western Nebraska. Today the college has an enrollment of about 3,000 students.
The 281-acre campus of the college houses twenty-five buildings. Five of its major buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The college operates 3 divisions and 13 Departments. The School of Business, Entrepreneurship, Applied and Mathematical Sciences and Sciences supervises the Department of Applied Sciences, Department of Business, Department of Mathematical Sciences and Department of Physical and Life Sciences.
The School of Education, Human Performance, Counseling, Psychology and Social Work manages the Department of Counseling, Psychology and Social Work, Department of Education, and Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. The School of Liberal Arts Department of Communication Arts oversees the Department of English & Humanities, Department of Justice Studies, Department of Music, Department of Social Sciences and the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
Chadron confers four-year degrees as well as graduate programs leading to master’s and specialist’s degrees in more than 40 areas of interest: Agriculture, American Indian Studies, Art, Biology, Business, Child Development Center, Chemistry, Communication, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Design & Technology Education, Education, English, Family & Consumer Sciences, General Studies, Geography, Geoscience, Graduate Studies, Health, Health Professions, History, Humanities, Journalism, Legal Studies, Library Media Specialist, Mathematics, Museum Studies, Music, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Pre-Law, Psychology, Public Relations, Rangeland Management, Recreation, Rural Health Opportunities Program, Social Work, Social Sciences, Sociology, Special Education, and Theatre.
Through its distance and alternative learning programs covering the entire western part of Nebraska, the college also provides continuous off-campus and online education in about 50 courses throughout the year.
Academic costs (2008-09) include tuition of $4557 for full-time state residents; and $8052 for full-time non-residents. Room and board costs $4654; room only, $2184. Students can avail of an average financial aid package amounting to $2600.
