Bloomfield College

Bloomfield College is an independent, four-year, co-educational college located in a suburban residential community in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Primarily established as a training school for German-speaking ministers in 1868, it was originally named the German Theological Seminary of Newark, New Jersey. It is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) which should explain why its first classes were held in a room in the First German Presbyterian Church. It started occupying its present location in 1872.

The institution’s name was changed to Bloomfield College and Seminary in 1931. Thirty years later, the term “Seminary” was replaced with the term “Institute”. It did not take long after which the name Bloomfield College was adapted. At present, the college occupies an 11-acre tree-lined campus that is easily accessible by train, bus or car.

There are about 2,100 students currently enrolled at Bloomfield College including full and part-time. With 190 full and part-time faculty members, the student/faculty ratio is 14:1. It follows a semestral academic calendar and makes available over 200 computers for students use. These computers are all connected to the Internet as well as the campus network.
