Montclair State University was founded in 1908 as the New Jersey State Normal School at Montclair. Organized into four colleges and two schools comprised of the College of the Arts, College of Education and Human Services, College of Humanities and Social Science, College of Science and Mathematics, School of Business and the John J. Cali School of Music, Montclair State University offers 53 majors, 59 minors, 60 concentrations and various certificate programs and teacher certification programs at the undergraduate level. Graduate studies are comprised of 123 degree programs and at least 60 certificate courses.

Degrees offered include Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Business Administration, Master of Education, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Science, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Environmental Management, Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Science. Special programs in Continuing Education are likewise offered. The university is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
