Institute of American Indian Arts
Congressionally chartered as the Institute of American Indian Arts and Alaska Native Culture and Arts Development in 1986, the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) opened its academic doors in 1962 on the campus of the Indian School located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. IAIA has been instrumental in empowering Indian people on their efforts for self-sufficiency and education as well as in the expression of cultural and artistic traditions. Programs offered by the Institute of American Indian Arts lead to associate degrees requiring a minimum of 63 semester credit hours and bachelor’s degrees requiring the completion of a minimum of 125 semester credit hours. It is the nation’s only fine arts college dedicated to the traditions of all American Indians. Four-year degree programs are offered in Studio Arts, Visual Communication, Creative Writing and Museum Studies.
There are about 112 tribes represented in the institution’s student body in any given academic year. More than 3,800 students have graduated from IAIA, most of whom come from any of the 562 tribes in the nation that are federally recognized. It is acknowledged by UNESCO as one of the most significant art education institutions in the world. Works of students, alumni and faculty form the base of the National Collection of Contemporary Indian Art housed in the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum.
Tuition for full-time students is $ 2,400.00 per year. Credits beyond 18 are charged $ 100.00 per credit hour. Books and supplies cost about $ 1,850.00 while an average meal plan costs $ 2,500.00 per year. Rooms cost $ 2,400.00 per year. Students are afforded a different learning experience as the IAIA campus facilities include large art studios and academic buildings combining state-of-the-art technology and remarkable architecture.
