Alfred University
Alfred University, founded in 1936, is one of the first coed institutions in the United States. It is a private non-sectarian institution located in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in Alfred, New York.
AU is also known for having high academic standards. It is a selective university with most undergrad students having A, B, or B+ high school averages and a median SAT score of 1080 to 1280. Applicants who get in this university can choose among more than 60 majors and degree programs in its four colleges and schools. Students also have the opportunity of studying abroad, applying for internships and do research. Admissions staff gives campus tours on weekdays from 9:30 AM to 4:30PM.
AU has 1,900 full-time undergrads and 118 part-time grad students coming from 31 states and 200 countries. Average class size is 18 and student to faculty ratio is 12 to 1. Students are in good hands since 85% of the faculty has doctorate or terminal degrees in their field.
AU has earned the distinction of being ranked by News and World Report as #2 for being a “Great school at a Great Price” for 2009. In addition, 95% of the students receive some form of financial assistance. Tuition is currently $24,366 for those attending the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and College of Business, $19,722 for those in Engineering programs, and $14,332 (NY State residents)/$19722 for students in other programs/colleges.
On-campus housing is available at $5,706 per year for double rooms and $6,424 per year for single rooms (limited rooms). All residence halls are coed and offer room and board. Meal plans costs range from $5,084 to $5,408 per year.
