Bank Street College of Education

The Bank Street College of Education started out in 1916 as the Bureau of Educational Experiments. Borne out of a desire to discover the ideal environment wherein children can grow and learn to live their fullest potential while educating teachers and other concerned individuals towards the creation of such environment, the college grew from its humble beginning to its formidable present. It is a college that supports the different complexities of educating the young as well as the adults.

Aside from being a school for children and a family center, it is also a Graduate School that offers individualized master’s degree programs for aspiring teachers and school leaders. Bank Street College performs extensive outreach work in schools and communities. It also creates innovative educational materials for and about children. The college stands on a highly accessible location in the Upper West Side of Manhattan between Broadway and Riverside Drive.

There are about 1,050 students currently enrolled in the Graduate School ably handled by 125 faculty members. The various short courses and workshops serve about 1,400 students. The Children’s Programs School has 44 head teachers and 14 associate teachers handling a total of 430 students. About 51 children are served by the Family Center Inclusive Day Care handled by 4 head teachers and 4 assistant teachers with the help of interns, part-time teachers, aides, student teachers and therapists. The Family Center and Community Based Special Education Program has 29 teachers and 12 therapists serving the needs of 54 children 0 to 3 years old and 39 pre-kindergarten.

Bank Street College of Education is certainly on its way to fulfilling the visions of its educator-founder Lucy Sprague Mitchell. She believed that education is for people of all ages.
