Cornell University

Cornell University is located in New York and was founded in 1865. It was the first university in the U.S. to offer programs in veterinary medicine, industrial and labor relations, and hotel management. Cornell is a private school, as well as being a federal land-grant institution.

The University is home to 13,510 undergraduate students and 6,290 graduate and professional students. Medical Sciences graduate students number 1,033. The student body is made up of people from all parts of the United States and 17 percent of people attending Cornell are from U.S. possessions or are international students from 120 countries worldwide.

Admission Requirements

Cornell accepts approximately 10 percent of applicants for first-year programs. Prospective students are asked to submit the Common Application, high school transcripts (midyear and final), and teacher recommendations. If you are interested in the Hotel Administration or the Architecture programs, a personal interview is also required.

The University accepts applications from September 1 – November 1 for Early Decision. The cutoff for a regular decision is January 2. Each College at Cornell has specific requirements for SAT or ACT test results that need to be included with the applicant’s materials.

Cost of Attending Cornell

Tuition and fees for Cornell will cost $37,954. The fee for a shared room is $7,210 and the traditional dining plan is $4,950. Books and supplies will run $760, and students will need to budget $1,540 for personal expenses. The total cost of attending Cornell comes in at $52,414.

Sports at Cornell

Cornell Big Red has 36 varsity sports teams, including baseball, basketball, football, ice hockey tennis, swimming, and volleyball. The school is known for excellence on the playing field as well as in the classroom. The women’s basketball team made it to the NCAA tournament in 2008. The Cornell wrestling team has performed well in recent years. The University also offers a number of intramural sports, as well as five fitness centers located on the campus for students to use.

Online Learning at Cornell

Cornell’s Office of Executive Education offers courses in Hotel Management to working professionals who want to study off-campus through their eCornell distance learning program. A number of certificate programs are available, and students can take four years to complete the requirements for a certificate.
