Elmira College

Elmira College is a private, coeducational, liberal arts college that holds the distinction of being the first college in the world to offer women the opportunity for college education and earning university degrees. Established in 1855, Elmira College is the so-called “mother of women’s colleges” for having granted a baccalaureate degree to women that is equal to degrees granted to men at a time when such opportunity was practically unheard of. It has been a coeducational institution since 1969.

Located in the City of Elmira in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York, Elmira College occupies a 55-acre historic site with at least 8 college buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The campus is home to 7 classroom buildings, 2 administrative office buildings, 11 dormitories, the Mark Twain Study, the President’s Home, library, health center, computer lab facilities and the campus center. The library has more than 250,000 books, over 25,000 print and e-journals, a comprehensive collection of CDs and DVDs plus a state-of-the-art computer lab facility.

Total present enrollment is approximately 1,200 students from 35 states and 31 foreign countries. The average class size is 16 while the student/faculty ratio is 12:1. Ninety-eight percent of the faculty members hold PhD or the highest degree in their field.

Elmhurst College’s academic calendar consist of two 12-week terms followed by a 6-week term which is devoted to innovative courses, independent studies, research, field experiences and travel. Its academic programs consist of liberal arts and sciences education that has been combined with communication, international studies and the humanities. Program curriculum offers traditional education with hands-on real world experiences.

Being a residential campus, Elmira College requires all undergraduates to live on-campus with the exception of those living with their parents locally. Annual tuition amounts to $ 33,500.00 while room and board cost about $ 10,800.00. Students who demonstrate financial need receive financial assistance.
