Hartwick College
Hartwick College is a private, four-year co-educational liberal arts and sciences learning institution located in Oneonta, New York. Founded in 1797, it traces its beginnings to the efforts of John Christopher Hartwick, a Lutheran Minister who led early settlers in the area now known as Upstate New York, and dreamed of an institution of higher learning for people in this area. This dream was realized after his death with the establishment of Hartwick Seminary in 1797 which later moved to its current location in Oneonta and became a four year college. From 1960 onwards, the school’s ties with the Lutheran Church waned and today the college carries no religious affiliations.
Academically, Hartwick College offers degrees in Bachelor of Arts and science in 31 varied majors with minors available for each major. It also has pre-professional programs in law, medicine, engineering, and allied health professions; and maintains five programs in cooperation with other universities. With a strong liberal arts core, Hartwick College students are able to get well-rounded training prior to pursuing the degree they desire.
Currently, there are approximately 1,480 students enrolled at the college under the guidance of 103 fulltime faculty members, 98% of whom hold the highest degree in their fields. With a student to faculty ratio of 10.8 to 1 and the average class size at 18, students are given enough focus by their teachers to allow them to get the most of their chosen courses.
Cost of tuition at Hartwick College for academic year 2009-2010 is US$32,550. Students who want to live on campus have to pay an additional fee of about US$4,700 for housing and US$4,375 for meals. The college offers financial aid to qualified students in the form of loans and grants.
