Hofstra University

Hofstra University is a private, nonsectarian co-educational institution of higher learning located in Hempstead, Long Island, just 25 miles east of New York. Founded in 1935, the original vision was for the school to be an independent institution of higher learning. However, at the start, it was established as an extension of New York University under the name Nasau College – Hofstra Memorial of New York University. It wasn’t until 1937 when the university became the independent Hofstra College, renamed Hofstra University in 1963.

Today, the university is accredited to grant Bachelor’s degrees in over 140 undergraduate program options, graduate degrees in 150 graduate program options plus PhD., Ed.D., Psy.D., Au.D., and J.D. degrees, advanced certificates and professional diplomas. The university is divided into the following distinct colleges and schools: Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Frank G. Zarb School of Business, School of Communication, School of Education, Health and Human Services, School of Law, School for University Studies, Honors College, Hofstra University Continuing Education, and the proposed Hofstra University School of Medicine in partnership with North Shore-LIJ Health System.

Cost of tuition for academic year 2009-2010 for fulltime undergraduate students taking up 12-17 credits is US$16,650 for the first term and US$15,050 for the second term. Part-time undergraduate students as well as those taking up credits in excess of 17 pay US$890 per credit hour. For graduate students, tuition cost is US$925 per credit hour for the Zarb School of Business and US$900 per credit hour for other courses. Financial aid in the form of loans and scholarships are extended to qualified students.
