Long Island University (LIU)
Long Island University or LIU is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational institute of higher education with two main campuses in Brooklyn and Brookville and four branch campuses at Brentwood, Riverhead, Rockland, and Westchester counties.
LIU was chartered by the New York State Education Department in 1926 in Brooklyn with the mission to provide “effective and moderately priced education to people from all walks of life.” In 1951, cognizant of the fact that the growing population in the area meant an increasing demand in the educational needs of the people, a second campus was established in Brookville to be known as the C.W. Post campus.
In both its campuses, LIU offers degree programs on the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels with each location offering the strength of its own academic offerings and dedicated faculty members. All its four branch campuses, on the other hand, offer graduate degrees although only the Brentwood campus carries a Bachelor of Arts program. The Riverhead campus houses the Homeland Security Management Institute, one of the country’s leading institutions in homeland security training.
Cost of attendance as well as the guidelines and procedures for financial aid at LIU differs per campus in view of the diverse programs each campus offers and the unique character of each campus.
To date, there are over 24,000 students enrolled in degree-granting and continuing education programs in LIU ably assisted by its nearly 650 fulltime faculty members.
The fact that it has produced over 170,000 living alumni is a testament to its success in the fulfillment of its mission to provide quality education to individuals from all walks of life.
