Polytechnic Institute of New York University

Polytechnic Institute, the second oldest private institute of technology in the United States was established in 1854 in Brooklyn, New York City. It was an independent educational institution until it merged with New York University in 2008. Now, NYU – Poly, as it is commonly called, is NYU’s exclusive resource in engineering and applied sciences.

NYU-Poly prides itself in its distinguished history in electrical engineering, polymer chemistry, aerospace, and microwave engineering. NYU-Poly is associated with advances in engineering technology and scientific research. Its other research specializations include cyber security, advanced technology in telecommunications, technology and enterprise, and distributed information system.

NYU-Poly offers undergraduate and graduate degrees such as Bachelor of Science; Master of Science, Master of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in a wide range of programs. Its eleven academic departments include Finance and Risk Engineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Mechanical, Aerospace and Manufacturing Engineering, and Technology Management.

Average class size at NYU-Poly is twenty-two. NYU-Poly also offers direct exchange agreement that enables students to study abroad for one semester or one year.

NYU-Poly also offers graduate programs at other sites including Long Island, Westchester, Manhattan, and some programs in Israel; as well as online graduate programs (called the eNYU-Poly program). These graduate programs are under four departments, namely Bioinformatics, Telecommunications Networks, Organizational Behavior and Electrical Engineering. Graduate certificates are also offered online. For example, for one to be awarded a Graduate certificate in Cybersecurity, he or she should take three required courses (three credit units each) plus two electives. Typically, online students are recommended to take nine credits per year.

Apart from its edge in the sciences, NYU Poly is also known for its outreach programs to encourage math and science education in New York elementary and high schools.
