Bennett College
Bennett College for Women is located in Greensboro, North Carolina on a fifty-five acre campus conveniently located near the Piedmont-Triod International Airport. It traces its beginning in 1873 from the basement of the Warnersville Methodist Episcopal Church with seventy students enrolled in elementary and secondary level studies.
The present site was purchased by a group of emancipated slaves. The school was then able to add college level courses and permanent facilities. The formerly co-educational school became a college for women upon the joint efforts of the Women’s Home Missionary Society and the Board of Education of the Church. With the continued focus on young women’s growth in the intellectual, spiritual and cultural aspects as the college’s main goal, graduates of Bennett College have become contributors to achievements in all walks of life.
Degrees in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, Bachelor of Social Work and the Bachelor of Fine Arts are offered. A total of 16 majors are currently being offered plus a dual degree engineering program in cooperation with the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. This allows students of Bennett College to earn a second degree in engineering from the said university. Collaborative Degree Programs in Nursing is likewise offered with Howard University.
Total enrolment is 689 while full-time faculty is 55. The student/faculty ratio is 11:1. Tuition and fees cost $ 14,648.00 while room and board rate for double occupancy is $ 6,478.00. Books and supplies would require an additional $ 1,200.00. Bennett College believes that education should be related to humanitarian ends.
