Brevard College

Brevard College is a four-year private, coeducational liberal arts college affiliated with the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. It was founded in 1853 and is considered to be the oldest college or university in the mountains of North Carolina. It occupies a 120-acre campus within the City of Brevard, close to the Pisgah National Forest, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.

The college offers degrees in Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Science with majors in Art, Biology, Business and Organizational Leadership, Criminal Justice, English, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Exercise Science, General Science, Health Science Studies, History, Integrated Studies, Mathematics, Music, Music Education, Psychology, Religious Studies, Theatre Studies, Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education. Programs for Teacher Licensure and Pre-Professional Studies are also offered.

The student body consists of 650 students from 35 states and 13 foreign countries with 57 full-time faculty members. Student/faculty ratio is 11:1. At least 73% of faculty members hold the highest academic degree in their field. The responsibility for learning is expected to be shouldered by both professors and students.

Brevard College was formed through the merger of Rutherford and Weaver, two Methodist colleges, on a campus donated by the then Brevard Institute. These three academic institutions all experienced financial difficulties brought on by multiple natural disasters as well as the Great Depression. Brevard College opened its academic doors to 385 students.

Full-time residential tuition for 12 credit hours is $20,900.00 annually. Part-time students are charged $420.00 per credit hour for 1-5 hours and $770.00 per credit hour for 6-11 hours. Room and board rates range from $7,750.00 to $8,250.00 annually.
