Elizabeth City State University
Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) is a four-year institution of higher education based at 1704 Weeksville Road, Elizabeth City in Northeastern Carolina. A constituent institution of the University of North Carolina System, the university originally served the educational needs of African-American students. At present, the student body has become increasingly multi-cultural. It was founded in 1891 as a normal school which taught and trained teachers of the “colored race” to serve in North Carolina’s common schools. It became a four-year teacher’s college in 1937, a state college in 1963 and achieved university status in 1969.
ECSU offers 38 baccalaureate degree programs and 4 master’s degree programs through its schools namely the School of Arts and Humanities, the School of Business and Economics, the School of Education and Psychology and the School of Mathematics, Science and Technology. The university’s Continuing Education Program is primarily responsible for non-credit offerings. Although completely online degrees are not available at present, ECSU offers courses that can be completed by combining traditional on-campus and online classes.
The university property is comprised of 862 acres of land, 200 acres of which is occupied as the campus proper. ECSU has almost 20,000 alumni and have at least 3,000 students enrolled for the present semester. Its extensive library has more than 199,800 books, 487,700 microfilms, 70 databases, 1,290 sound recordings, 1,730 serials and subscriptions and 390 videotapes and films. The admission process essentially consists of three simple steps: information request, campus visit and online application.
Annual education cost for North Carolina residents is about $ 9,323.00 while non-residents are charged $ 18,732.00. This amount would include payment for tuition, room and board. Distance Learning Programs cost $ 58.00 per credit for residents and $ 363.00 per credit for non-residents.
