Institute of Textile Technology

The Institute of Textile Technology (ITT) is a four-year private, not-for-profit educational institution primarily established for the purpose of textile research. It was established in 1944 at Charlottesville, Virginia due to the location’s proximity to Washington, DC and its distance from major players in the textile industry. Its serene, pastoral setting and the presented access to resources of the University of Virginia were also considered for the choice of location. The Institute of Textile Technology was originally located at 2551 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, Virginia.

The institute was housed in an estate known as “Boxwood” and was staffed by highly respected scientists. It offered programs leading to the bachelor’s and master’s degree. There were more than 20 students enrolled in the campus per academic year as the institute’s target was to invite up to 15 students to enroll in the ITT Master of Science Program.

An educational alliance between ITT and North Carolina State University (NCSU) was formed to reduce operating costs while preserving the unique approach to textile technology graduate education identified with ITT. At present, ITT is no longer an independent graduate school and has relocated to the Centennial Campus of NCSU. ITT at NCSU is located at 2401 Research Drive, Raleigh, North Carolina and can be reached through telephone number (919) 513-7704. NCSU’s Centennial Campus is recognized as the premier research university in the country.

Programs are offered through ITT’s departments comprised of the Textile and Apparel Technology and Management; Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science; and Textile Extension Education for Economic Development. Textile education is the cornerstone of ITT’s mission. Professional and executive short courses and seminars related to the key technical issues of the industry are also offered.
