Wake Forest University

Wake Forest University is private school located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The school was originally formed to educate Baptist ministers as well as lay people, and opened its doors in February, 1834. It was originally known as the “Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute” because students were required to spend part of their day working outside.

In 1839, students were long longer made to perform manual labor and the school’s name was changed to Wake Forest College. Over the years, the school’s holdings expanded and the University became fully accredited in 1967.

There are 4,400 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students attending Wake Forest. Not counting the instructors at the medical school, there are 636 faculty members. The student-to-teacher ratio is 14:1.

Admission Requirements

For students who know that Wake Forest is their first choice, the school will accept Early Decision applications any time after they complete their junior year of high school. The deadline for applications is November 15. Decisions are made on a rolling basis starting on September 15. The deadline for Regular Applications is January 15, and decisions are released April 1.

Along with your application form, you will need to submit your official transcripts and a teacher recommendation. Unlike other schools, you do not need to submit your SAT or ACT results as part of the process. Instead, Wake Forest Admissions staff consider your academic history, writing ability, and extracurricular activities. Your character and talent are also considered. If you want to attend Wake Forest, a personal interview is strongly recommended.

Tuition & Financial Aid

The cost of tuition at Wake Forest is $38,206 per academic year. Room and board is an additional $10,410. Students attending Wake Forest are also required to pay $416 in mandatory fees.

Sports at Wake Forest

The Wake Forest University Demon Deacons are members of the NCAA Division I in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The school’s football team performed very well in the 2006 and 2007 seasons. On December 20, 2007, the team played in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, NC and defeated the Connecticut Huskies by a score of 24-10. The baseball, men’s basketball, women’s field hockey, golf, and soccer teams have also had good success on the playing field over the years.

Students at Wake Forest can also participate in several intramural and club sports. Bowling, flag football, racquetball, softball, tennis, and water polo are examples. Several exercise classes, including cardio, step, and kickboxing, are offered on campus.
