Antioch College
Antioch College was founded in 1852 with the goal of providing progressive education to its students. It was established in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and focused on liberal arts. The college was considered to offer a unique experience in this broad field.
The first president of Antioch College was Horace Mann, who came up with the motto of the college, “Be ashamed to die until you win some victory for humanity.” Horace Mann ran the college from its inception until 1859, when he passed away. The approach that the college took back then was a mixture of classroom learning and practical work experience. This tradition was carried on to the modern day Antioch College.
The college had experienced some bumps on the road, though, and by the academic year 2007-2008, the number of students enrolled in the college had dwindled to a mere 200. In June of 2007, the Board of Trustees made an announcement about closing the school. Although alumni and other concerned groups put a lot of effort into opening the college again, negotiations fell through, and the college closed in June of 2008. Today, Antioch College remains closed, although their web site states that they are in a process of transition.
The latest update from the Board of Trustees states that they are coming up with a plan to create a new independent Antioch College, which will be a four-year residential liberal arts educational institution. To date, the college remains closed, and the web site provides a link to Antioch University and its campuses instead.
