Art Academy of Cincinnati

The Art Academy of Cincinnati (AAC) is private college of arts and design located in Cincinnati, Ohio and accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The academy previously was a department of the University of Cincinnati then a museum school of the Cincinnati Art Museum before it became an independent college.

The academy is known for being one of the smallest four-year art colleges in the United States in terms of number of students with less than 200 enrollees. Classes are also very small and student to faculty ratio is excellent at 8 to 1, earning them reviews for the individualized attention each student receives.

The Art Academy of Cincinnati offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The undergraduate programs are based on a unique “1-2-1” model where students get to take core coursework together on their first year, individual majors in their second and third years, and advanced tutorial and senior seminars on their fourth year. Undergraduate degree programs available include Art History, Communication Arts (Digital Art and Photography), Fine Arts (Digital Art and Photography), Illustration, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Visual Communication Design. Online classes are not currently available at AAC.

ACC has a selective admissions policy. Admission requirements are as follows:

• Application form
• Applicant’s portfolio (with 10 to 12 pieces of artwork)
• 500-word artist statement
• Letter of recommendation from an art teacher
• High school transcript and test scores

Estimated full-time tuition at AAC for 2009-2010 is $21,500 per year. An additional $900 per credit hour is charged for those with over 18 credits.

Room and board costs are separate at AAC since meal plans are not available. Housing at AAC is a dorm with 12 apartment-style suites. Out-of-area students are given priority when it comes to housing. Dorm occupancy costs $6,000.
