Hebrew Union College
Hebrew Union College –Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) is a private learning institution and the oldest Jewish Seminary in the United States. Founded in 1875 in Cincinnati under the guidance of Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise, the institute went on to establish a second campus in New York City via a merger with its rival Reform Jewish Institute of Religion in 1950. In 1954 another campus was set up in Los Angeles, California and in 1963, in Jerusalem.
Although it is also an institute that provides a wide variety of academic and professional programs, the HUC-JIR is primarily a seminary for training rabbis, cantors, educators and communal workers in Reform Judaism. In fact, its seminary in Jerusalem is the only seminary tasked to train Reform Jewish clergy.
Cost of tuition for attending HUC-JIR is US$19,000. This does not include other mandatory fees like the student activity fee, the application fee and many others. Students with demonstrated financial need will be extended financial aid in the form of loans and grants to help him in paying for his cost of attendance.
Courses offered at HUC-JIR for the training of Jewish clergy include Rabbinical Studies, Cantorial Studies, Jewish Educational Studies, and Jewish Communal Service Studies. In addition to this, HUC-JIR also offers professional programs like a Pre-Doctoral M.A. Program in Jewish Studies, the School of Graduate Studies in Cincinnati, the Edgar F. Magnin School of Graduate Studies in Los Angeles, the Graduate Studies in New York, the Nelson Glueck School of Biblical Archaeology in Jerusalem and the Jerome H. Louchheim School of Judaic Studies in Los Angeles.
On campus housing is available for some of HUC-JIR’s campuses except for its campus in New York.
