Oberlin College

Oberlin College is a private, liberal arts college located in Oberlin, Ohio. It was founded by a pair of Presbyterian ministers in 1833 at the same time as the town of Oberlin.

Today, the over 2,800 students enrolled at Oberlin College is divided between the College of Arts & Sciences and the Conservatory of Music. The College of Arts & Sciences offers students over 45 majors, minors and concentrations the most popular of which are English, Biology, History, Politics and Environmental Studies.

For its Conservatory of Music, requirements for admission are quite stringent with over 1,400 students vying for one of 120 seats. Because of this, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music’s artistic quality remains high.

Cost of attendance at Oberlin College for academic year 2009-2010 is US$50,484. This can be broken down into tuition of US$39,686; multi-occupancy room rate of US$5,450; cost of meals/board of US$5,030; and required fees of US$318. Other estimated costs include cost of books at US$830, personal expenses at US$978 and travel which may vary. There is also the student health insurance estimated at US$805. For part-time students, rate of tuition per credit is US$1,650 and for those who want to enroll beyond the required amount of credits, an additional cost of US$1,040 per credit will be charged. To help students pay for their cost of attendance, financial aid is extended to them in the form of loans, grants, scholarships and student employment.

On-campus housing is available to students in keeping with the college’s belief that having students live in community with one another helps them develop skills in dealing with various kinds of people. In line with this belief, all students are required to live on campus from their freshman to their senior year.
