About Western Governors University
Western Governors University is a not-for-profit university founded by the governors of nineteen western states to expand educational access for the working adult. The university emphasizes mastery of essential skills and knowledge in your field, basing progress toward your online degree on passing rigorous assessments (such as tests, projects, assignments, etc.) instead of accumulating credit hours. WGU was created specifically to help adult learners fit college into their already busy lives. The adult learner has always been WGU’s focus, unlike many other universities that focus on young college students.
Accreditation
Western Governors University is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, one of the major accrediting commissions by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. WGU has the distinction of being the only university to receive regional accreditation from four regional accrediting commissions. In part because of its founding by nineteen U.S. governors encompassing a wide geographic region, WGU was simultaneously approved by four regional accrediting commissions, an extraordinary recognition that had never nor since occurred. The Northwest Commission is now considered WGU’s “home” accrediting body.
Although regional accreditation is considered the highest form of accreditation, WGU is also nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC).
The WGU Teachers College is the first and only exclusively online teacher education institution to receive accreditation from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
