Founded as the Vanport Extension Center for veterans of World War 2, the school evolved into Portland State in the 1950s, as it added a number of programs, including a graduate school and earned accreditation by the Oregon State System of Higher Education. Known for its cultural and technical studies programs, the school offers well known programs Engineering, Computer Science and Interdisciplinary Studies.
The Princeton Review ranks the school highly within the Western Region for its wide offering of degree programs across bachelor’s master’s and doctorate levels, and its rated as a research university by US News. Best known for its School of Business Administration, the school offers a wide range of colleges from Liberal Arts to Social Work, Fine Arts, Engineering and Computer Science, Education and Urban and Public Affairs. The school of Extended Studies allows on line distance learning access to many of its degree programs. Known for its international programs, the school offers specialized courses in International Studies, Asian Studies, Japanese Studies and Middle Eastern Studies.
