Bryn Mawr College
Offering academic programs for women that was deemed more ambitious than any other offered during the time, Bryn Mawr College opened in 1885 to provide an important educational option. A wealthy Quaker physician by the name of Joseph W. Taylor provided in his will for the establishment of a college that would provide advanced education for females. Taylor envisioned an institution that would also inculcate the Quaker beliefs in its students. He got his wish in Bryn Mawr although trustees converted it to a non-denominational institution in 1893 for the purpose of broadening the college’s mission.
Bryn Mawr College’s offering of graduate education through the Ph.D. to woman at a time when it was not common to do so, showed the institution’s seriousness in removing the limitations previously set on the intellectual achievement of women. The succeeding years saw the concretization of established goals in education. It strengthened its academic programs by initiating mutual cross-registration for all its undergraduate courses with other educational institutions such as Haverford College, Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania.
As it developed its curriculum, Bryn Mawr held on to its belief that the best environment for college life is a small college. It kept its class sizes small with a student/faculty ratio of 8:1. There are about 1,359 students coming from 46 US states, 39 foreign nations and the US Virgin Islands. Full-time faculty members total 158. The college’s 135-acre campus is located at a beautiful century-old suburb 11 miles west of Philadelphia, housing 40 academic buildings. There are about 15 residence halls servicing the on-campus residency requirements of students.
This renowned college for women provides affordable education. Tuition per course, per semester is $3,510.00. Part-time students pay $429.00 per credit inclusive of tuition and comprehensive fee.
