Cheyney University of Pennsylvania
Established in 1837 through a bequest, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is a public, co-educational black university forming part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
Cheyney University maintains a 275-acre campus situated in the Cheyney community within the Thornbury Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania where it offers a liberal arts education.
Under the School of Arts and Sciences are three departments. The Department of Humanities & Communications offers degree programs in the following disciplines: Art, Communication Arts, English, Liberal Studies, Music, Music (Voice), Theater Arts, Theater Arts (Black Drama), Theater Arts (Communication Arts), Theater Arts (English), and Graphic Design. The Department of Natural & Applied Sciences’ programs include Biology, Biology & Chemistry, Chemistry, Computer & Information Sciences, General Science, Secondary Education (Mathematics), Mathematics, and Nanotechnology. The Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences programs include Political Science, Psychology, Social Relations (General), Social Relations (Criminal Justice), Social Relations (Sociology), Social Science, Geographic Information Science, Public Administration (General), Public Administration (Criminal Justice Administration), Public Administration (Non-profit Administration), and Public Administration (State & Local Government).
Under the School of Education and Professional Studies is the Department of Education & Leadership Studies confers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education (Biology), Secondary Education (Chemistry), Secondary Education (French), Secondary Education (General Science), Secondary Education (Mathematics), Secondary Education (Social Studies), Secondary Education (Spanish), and Special Education. Its professional studies program confers bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, Fashion Merchandising and Management, Hotel Restaurant and Tourism Management, and Recreation & Leisure Management.
Total number of undergraduates is more than 1,300. With 103 full-time and 24 part-time faculty, the ratio of students to faculty is 16:1.
Academic cost for 2009-2010 for in-state students is $7,360; for out-of-state students, $15,692. Eighty percent of undergraduates receive need-based financial aid averaging $5,800.
